Stones began his career with Barnsley, making his first-team debut in the Championship in March 2012. He joined Premier League club Everton for around £3 million in January 2013 and amassed 95 appearances over four seasons. In August 2016, he signed for Manchester City for an initial £47.5 million with add-ons. He won the Premier League and EFL Cup in 2018 and 2019, and the FA Cup in 2019 as well. Stones made his senior debut for England in May 2014 after previously being capped by England youth teams at under-19, under-20 and under-21 levels. He was chosen in England's squads for UEFA Euro 2016 and the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
Here’s an up close look at John Stones’ modified Nike Hypervenom Phantom ii boots which he wore during the 2016-17 season with Manchester City, as well as during the Euro 2016 tournament in France for the England national team. Custom made for John by Nike in the famous Montebelluna factory in Italy, where only the worlds elite Nike athletes get their boots hand crafted.
The overall shape of these boots are noticeably different to the retail versions. The tie box is taller, as well as the boots being wider and the heel areas being taller and reinforced. Below is a close up on feet image of John wearing the boots. Note the odd heel shape.
Instead of the thin 1-piece tongue design on the retail version of this boots, John opted for a Mercurial Vapor XI style tongue with thick additional padding. The tongue is also partially stitched to the upper of the boots, keeping them in his preferred position.
Each boot has had a thick piece of carbon fibre added through the spine, presumably to add strength through the middle, underneath where the insoles go. This is a common customisation with pro’s.
Each boot has also been personalised with “Stones Savage 5” along with the England flag, in a 3D style print which is very unique and a nice touch from Nike - unfortunately only available to pro’s, not general pairs sold in stores. Savage refers to his girlfriend’s surname at the time.
John can be seen in the below image wearing this pair during the Premier League fixture with AFC Bournemouth at the Etihad Stadium during the 2016-17 campaign.
The Montebelluna logo still visible on the special red insoles.
John can be seen in the image below wearing this pair during a Champions League tie at the Etihad Stadium during the 2016-17 campaign, talking with Pep Guardiola.
Among the other customisations on this pair, John also opted for a customised soleplate. Using the CTR360 Maestri SG-Pro plate. The FG studs have been made transparent, as well as the central Nike logo, to avoid television cameras picking this up.
This is a truly unique pair of match worn boots from one of the best young defenders in Europe, displaying the lengths that brands such as Nike go to, to please their athletes in what they are wearing. If you have a comment about this pair, feel free to write below!
