After beginning his professional career with Groningen, Van Dijk moved to Celtic in 2013, where he won the Scottish Premiership and was named in the PFA Scotland Team of the Year in both of his seasons with the club, also winning the Scottish League Cup in the latter. In September 2015, he joined Premier League side Southampton before signing for Liverpool in January 2018 for £75 million, a world record transfer fee for a defender at the time. Van Dijk was involved in reaching the 2018 UEFA Champions League Final during his first spring at Liverpool. In his first full season at the club Van Dijk was named the PFA Player of the Year and the Premier League Player of the Season for the 2018–19 season. Van Dijk starred as Liverpool won the 2019 UEFA Champions League Final where he was named man of the match.
Here we can provide a close up insight into what Van Dijk wears whilst captaining Liverpool and the Netherlands national team. Virgil is one of Nike's biggest sponsored athletes wearing their Tiempo silo, however his pairs are incomparable to the retail versions which you see in stores. These Legend 7 Elite's are from the 2018-19 season which were bespoke made for him to wear but he instead opted to wear the blue colourway which was released around the same time period by Nike.
VVD uses the SG-Pro HyperStability soleplate which is unavailable to the public - only on special request from top pros. The regular version of this soleplate is the "Anti-Clog" which features not only a completely different stud configuration, but also different flexibility and traction.
Virgil also favours a modified tongue, which features the sides being cut lower to allow more movement mirroring a traditional style tongue, this is topped with leather either side. Under the laces there is also a thick layer of sponge which prevents lacebite and adds comfort. The Tiempo Legend 7 Elite is known for having a thin and flimsy tongue.
At BCBOOTSUK we have had 2 pairs of VVD's match issued Tiempo Legend 7 Elite from Nike's "Game Over" pack and both have been identical. Considering each pair is hand made it is amazing how they have been made identical. Above we can see the padding under the lacing system with the cut sides from the right boot of each pair.
Nike have also added lace holes into the tongue for VVD to give the option of a more locked down feel.
Both pairs are personalised with family names Rike (wife) and Nila & Jadi (children) and the outer heel area, with the Suriname flag which was the birth country of his mother. On the instep of each heel are the dates of birth of his children with the Dutch flag.
The same personalisation can be seen on VVD's Nike Tiempo Legend 8 whilst wearing them during a Premier League match for Liverpool, picture courtesy of Shutterstock.
Each pair has carbon fibre strengthening running from the heel to the forefoot, with his ID numbers written on. This pair are hand made in Nike's Montebelluna factory in Italy where they make their elite players boots such as CR7 and Neymar.
The leather quality is much higher than the retail versions with it being thicker and softer. The toe box has been made larger as they have been made to VVD's exact specifications.
